Atsushi Nomi had difficulty breathing just before throwing the first pitch of the game against the Orix Buffaloes at Koshien Stadium on June 14 (he needed to leave the field for a drink of water and delayed the start of the game by about two minutes). He still managed to toss five shutout innings with ninety-nine pitches.
Nomi danced around questions about the incident from the reporters after the game. Tomoaki Kanemoto was not fully aware of the problem, but said it had something to do with the pitcher’s breathing, or a lack of oxygen.
Incidentally, the Tigers have been keeping Nomi’s pitch count to around 100 pitches because of concerns about overworking his left elbow.
[UPDATE @ 9:12pm]
Nomi was taken off the active roster today.
