[7/5/2016] Fighters could go back to using designated hitter when Otani pitches

Hideki Kuriyama told reporters his decision to use Shohei Otani as both a pitcher and hitter in the same game was something he originally planned to do for a limited amount of time. He also said he already decided when to stop and that he felt it had already gone on for a little too long. There is a good chance the Nippon Ham Fighters will go back to using the designated hitter when Otani takes the mound for his next start on July 10 against Lotte at Sapporo Dome.

Otani has batted for himself in his last six starts.

The numbers:

  • Hitting: 7-for-17, 7 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 8 BB, 4 SO, .412/.560/.647
  • Pitching: 6-0, 46.0 IP, 23 H, 1 HR, 57 SO, 11 BB, 3 R, 2 ER, 0.39 ERA, 0.74 WHIP
