[8/26/2016] Shun Takayama blasts first grand slam and reaches fifty RBI

Shun Takayama blasted a grand slam against the Yokohama Bay Stars at Yokohama Stadium on August 25. He became the fifty-fifth (accomplished fifty-six times) rookie in NPB history to hit a grand slam, first since Hayata Ito on September 27, 2012. Aside from Takayama and Ito, only one other rookie in Hanshin Tigers’ franchise history has hit a grand slam: Ryohei Igaue on October 23, 1936.

Takayama also reached fifty RBI on the season one plate appearance later with a two-run double. Only four other Hanshin rookies have recorded fifty or more RBI: Kaoru Betto with fifty-seven in 1948, Shigeru Tokuami with sixty-nine in 1950, Koichi Tabuchi with fifty-six in 1969, and Akinobu Okada with fifty-four in 1980.
