Infield/base coach Hirokazu Ibata caused a bit of a scare when he was hit by a piece of a broken bat during Friday night’s game against the Chunichi Dragons at Tokyo Dome.
Chunichi’s Shuhei Takahashi broke his bat when he popped out to short in the second inning. The broken bat flew into the Yomiuri dugout on the first base side and struck Ibata in the chest.
Ibata left the dugout for treatment and hitting coach Akira Eto temporarily took over as first base coach. He was able to return to the dugout.
Ibata saw the bat flying in his direction, but could not move because a bat boy was standing near him. He told reporters after the game that he was alright, but the team was not.
