Haruki Nishikawa blasted a walk-off grand slam to give the Nippon Ham Fighters a 5-1 victory over the Hiroshima Carp on Thursday.
Nishikawa is the eighteenth player (accomplished eighteen times) to hit a grand slam during a Nippon Series game, first since Kazuya Fukuura in 2005 (Game 3). He is the first player in franchise history to accomplish the feat.
He is the fifteenth player (accomplished sixteen times) to hit a walk-off home run during a Nippon Series game, first since Akira Nakamura in 2014 (Game 4). He joins Koichi Iwashita (1962, Game 5) as the only players in franchise history to accomplish the feat.
He is the second player to hit a walk-off grand slam during a Nippon Series game. The other player was Toru Sugiura in 1992 (Game 1).
He hit five home runs during the regular season this year. Only three other players have hit a walk-off during a Nippon Series in the same year they recorded five or less home runs during the regular season: Kazuhisa Inao in 1958 (Game 5, four home runs), Koichi Iwashita in 1962 (Game 5, four home runs), and Hector Cruz in 1983 (Game 5, four home runs).
