The Seibu Lions announced on March 14 that Takumi Kuriyama was involved in a car accident on the morning of the same day. The thirty-three-year-old was on his way to MetLife Dome for an exhibition game against Chunichi and was waiting at a stop light when he was hit from behind. He was taken to a hospital for tests and diagnosed with a minor injury to his back (cervical sprain). He is considered day-to-day.

Kuriyama participated in pre-game practices today. He was able to take batting practice and fielding practice.

Kuriyama was able to play in an exhibition game against Softbank on March 18. He started at designated hitter and batted seventh. He went 0-for-0 with two walks and an RBI (sac fly).
