Hirokazu Sawamura has not pitched in a game since he was tossed from a Nippon Ham exhibition game on March 4 (he threw a dangerous pitch; it was his first and only pitch of the game). He was allowed to leave an exhibition game against Lotte at Zozo Marine early because he was not feeling well. The Yomiuri Giants will wait to see how he is feeling in four to five days. If there is a no improvement, he could end up missing the start of the season.

According to reports filed today, Sawamura has been having problems with his right shoulder since late-February. There is a good chance he will not be on the opening day roster. He was reassigned to San-gun for rehab.

Sawamura pitched in a batting practice scrimmage at Giants Stadium on July 28. He faced six Ikusei players, threw twenty-two pitches, and topped out at 149km/h.

Sawamura could pitch in his first rehab game in early-August and join the active roster in mid-August.

Sawamura pitched in a Ni-gun game against Rakuten today. He entered the game in the eighth and tossed a shutout inning in relief. He faced four batters, allowed one hit, and struck out one.

Sawamura pitched in a batting practice scrimmage on August 16 and then made an appearance during a Ni-gun game against Seibu the following day on August 17. He entered the game in the seventh and retired the side in order. He struck out two and topped out at 152km/h. The Giants wanted to test Sawamura’s ability to pitch on consecutive days.

Sawamura pitched in a Ni-gun game against Yakult on August 24. He entered the game in the eighth and gave up two runs on two hits and a walk. He threw nineteen pitches, seventeen of which were fastballs. He topped out at 150km/h.

The Giants are expected to add Sawamura to the active roster today.
