[4/1/2017] Osaka Toin wins Spring Koshien

Osaka Toin beat Riseisha 8-3 earlier today and won the 89th Senbatsu (Spring Koshien).

Osaka carried a 3-0 lead into the 8th, but allowed three runs to score in the bottom of the 8th. They quickly recaptured the lead in the 9th on a two-run home run by pinch-hitter Ippei Nishijima. They tacked on three more runs and took an 8-3 lead.

Akira Neo took the mound in the bottom of the 9th for Osaka. He walked two runners before ending the game on a double play.

In other related news…

Senbatsu organizers announced a record high 532,000 fans attended the tournament this year. The previous high of 531,000 was set in 1989. The two tie-games and rematches helped push attendance figures this year.
