What is going on with Tetsuto Yamada? He is having a season that is completely inconsistent with his prior seasons, and Yakyu DB has not posted even a single post about NPB’s best position player in this season. Does he have some kind of lingering injury that he is playing through in order to prove his fighting spirit? This conspiracy of silence is very disturbing.

There have actually been a number of articles posted by the media in Japan about Yamada’s current season. I just haven’t really gotten around to posting something about it, but here are some of the explanations I have read.

      – He made some adjustments to his swing during the WBC that he has not been able to undo. It didn’t help that there was not a lot of time between the end of the WBC and the start of the NPB seasons.

      – General fatigue from a longer season due to the WBC.

      – He’s walking a fair amount (he leads the league with forty-eight), which might not be a problem when he isn’t struggling, but when he is, it could keep him from getting out of a slump.

      – Two hit by pitches in the back from last year (one on July 30 and another on September 11) are still lingering in the back of his head and keeping him off balance.

I haven’t really heard any rumors about an injury.
