[8/8/2017] NPB Retirement Exception Approved

The NPB’s board of directors meeting and the twelve teams’ executive committee meeting were held in Tokyo on August 7. Among the issues that were discussed:

  • Retirement exception – teams will be able to take advantage of this one-day exception during a player’s retirement ceremony. If the team uses the exception for a player, that player will not be able to play in any more regular season and Climax Series games, beginning the day after the exception is used. The player will be eligible for the Nippon Series. The exception allows teams to expand their active rosters (twenty-eight) for retiring players, but not their game day rosters (twenty-five). For example: one retirement exception will allow a team to carry twenty-nine players on the active roster, but still only twenty-five players on the game-day roster.
  • Advance notice of salaries – the players association wants teams to provide players with advance notice of their salaries. The players association is concerned that young players are not given enough time to think about the terms they are offered.
