Yutaro Sugimoto: Did You Know



September 9 vs Rakuten at Kobo Park Miyagi – Sugimoto blasted a lead-off home run off Wataru Karashima and became just the third Japanese player in NPB history to record a lead-off home for his first career hit. The other two players: Kunihisa Taneda on June 26, 1952 and and Yuki Miyazaki on September 29, 2012. The home run came in his second game, fourth plate appearance.

Sugimoto is also the thirty-second player in NPB history to hit a lead-off home run for his first career home run.

July 11 vs Rakuten at Rakuten Seimei – With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning, Sugimoto hit the first grand slam of his career off Wataru Karashima.

July 17 vs Nippon Ham at Kyocera Dome – Sugimoto blasted another grand slam, his second in as many games this season. He became the third player in Orix history to hit two grand slams in one month, behind Boomer Wells (April 1987) and Aarom Baldiris (April 2013). He is the first Orix player to hit at least two grand slams in one year since Baldiris hit three in 2013 and the first Japanese Orix player since Yasuo Fujii hit three in 2001.

Sugimoto became the eighth player in NPB history (sixth in Pacific League history) to hit home runs in two consecutive games. The other seven: Fumio Fujimura in 1953, Bunjiro Sakamoto (1957), Koji Akiyama (1993), Tuffy Rhodes (2000), Benny Agbayani (2005), Tyrone Woods (2006), and Micah Hoffpauir (2013).
