General … The start of the game was delayed until 3:03pm due to rain (sixty-three minute delay). … Yokohama … Otosaka recorded a pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning and became the ninth player in Central League Climax Series history, first in Yokohama Climax Series history, to hit a pinch-hit home run. Comment on "[Climax Series] Yokohama Bay Stars 13 – Hanshin Tigers 6 (October 15, 2017)"

  • Why were they playing under such horrible weather conditions? There was quite literally standing water all across the field.

Under normal circumstances, the game would have been postponed, but due to weather conditions this week and scheduling for the First Stage of the Climax Series, the league and umpires just probably wanted to get it done.

Bay Stars GM Shigeru Takada was quoted by media as saying (jokingly of course), “We would have played this game even if it meant having to wear rain boots.”

Obviously, this game was more important for Yokohama than Hanshin because the Tigers will advance in a tied series. The only chance for Yokohama to advance is tie the series then win the next game. But with the weather, there is a chance today’s game gets canceled. If Sunday’s game was rained out, a canceled game today would have meant Hanshin advancing to the Final Stage without the need for tomorrow’s game.

      • I guess I don’t understand a couple of things.

        1. Why are teams allowed to advance in a best-of-three on a tie game?
        2. If games are rain delayed. why aren’t they rescheduled?

        • Gen Post Author

It also comes down to the schedule. If you look at the Climax Series schedule, you’ll find that there is only one day open between the First Stage and the Final Stage. That one day is the alternate in case of a rain out. The Pacific League rules allow for a double-header, but not the Central League rules.

Additional, rules for both league include a situation where the second place team advances in the event of a tied series. Could be 0-0-0 if all games are rained out, 1-1-1 if each team wins a game and then one game ends in a tie, or 0-0-3 if all three games end in a tie…

The best thing to do is allow for more time in between the First and Final Stages. But the NPB has been pushing for more international games during the winter, and those usually come in November, which means they have to schedule enough time between the end of the Nippon Series and whatever international games they play to satisfy the players. This year there’s the Asia Pro Yakyu Championship.

As for the tie scenarios… It’s just an extension of the tie game. If a game can end in a tie, a series can end in a tie.

  • In other words, poor planning, or trying to squeeze too much into a tight schedule.

It’s seems today’s game was cancelled. If they could play under those conditions yesterday, why not today?

As of now, the weather report for tomorrow actually isn’t all that bad. On Sunday, I think they were worried of the possibility that the weather might not be good on Tuesday. And then today, they may have figured that the weather tomorrow will at least be better than today. The weather today may have been better than on Sunday (I’m not sure since I live in Tokyo), but they probably didn’t want to risk both games getting canceled (which again would mean the Tigers advance after playing only one game).
