Thirty-year-old Katsuya Kakunaka is scheduled to earn his free agent option next season. The Chiba Lotte Marines have offered both one-year and multi-year deals during preliminary negotiations. Kakunaka is expected to make a decision during negotiations this month. Either way, the Marines would like Kakunaka to stick around long-term.

[UPDATE 12/20 @ 2:58am]
Kakunaka turned down a three-year contract and signed a one-year deal worth an estimated 131 million yen (down ten million yen from this season).
[UPDATE 12/20 @ 12:37pm]
Kakunaka went with the one-year contract because he wants more options next year. If he does earn his option next season and has a good year, it could get him a nicer multi-year deal. Kakunaka is also thinking about his age and how signing a three-year contract now will mean having to wait until he turns thirty-four to use his option, which might limit his options.
