[12/14/2017] Nippon Ham: Oswaldo Arcia possible replacement for Shohei Otani

The Nippon Ham Fighters like twenty-six-year-old Oswaldo Arcia. They see him as someone that might be able to fill the opening left by Shohei Otani’s departure. In ninety-three games with the Reno Aces, Arcia went 111-for-341 with twenty-four home runs and recorded a slash line of .326/.410/.639. He also walked forty-five times and struck out eighty-six times.

mlbtraderumors.com reports that Nippon Ham Fighters signed Arcia for $1.7 million plus $300,000 in performance incentives. He was a fairly obvious choice to replace Shohei Otani’s bat (the Fighters won’t find anyone on the international market to replace Otani’s pitching arm), assuming that the Yomiuri Giants are the going to shell out the yen to sign Alex Guerrero.

If the reported numbers are accurate, I am a bit surprised that Arcia got this much for his first year in NPB, but it probably reflects the fact that the KBO’s willingness to spend on foreign hitters has driven up the market.
