[10/29/2018] Tomoyuki Sugano wins Sawamura Award for second year in a row

The NPB and the Yomiuri Giants announced today that Tomoyuki Sugano was selected for the 2018 Sawamura Award. The award selection committee met in Tokyo on October 29 and needed just about ten minutes to make their selections. Sugano was a unanimous pick as he qualified in all categories for the award.

  • At least fifteen wins: fifteen wins
  • At least 150 strikeouts: 200 strikeouts
  • At least ten complete games: ten complete games
  • A 2.50 ERA or better: 2.14 ERA
  • At least 200 innings: 202 innings
  • At least twenty-five games: twenty-eight games
  • A .600 or better winning percentage: .652 winning percentage

Sugano joins Shigeru Sugishita (1951, 1952), Masaichi Kaneda (1956-1958), Minoru Murayama (1965, 1966), and Masaki Saito (1995, 1966) as the only players in NPB history to win the award in two or more consecutive seasons. He also became the eighth winner to qualify in all seven categories.

Selection Committee: Tsuneo Horiuchi (chairman), Masaji Hiramatsu, Choji Murata, Manabu Kitabeppu, and Hisashi Yamada.

    Yomiuri doesn’t post players, but is there a chance they’ll release him for the right price like the Fighters did with Ohtani?
