2018 NPB Fine Judge Awards

Four NPB umpires were recognized for their work on the field this season.

Naoto Shikita
April 12 – Yokohama vs Yomiuri at Tokyo Dome
Top of the first inning, runners on first and second and two out. Single to center. Play at the plate. Runner appeared to be out, but Shikita was able to tell the runner was safe from the angle where he stood.

Shinji Hashimoto
April 22 – Hiroshima vs Chunichi at Nagoya Dome
Bottom of the third inning, runners on first and no out. Yota Kyoda attempted a bunt. Hashimoto noticed Kyoda’s leg was outside of the batter’s box and called him out.

Hiroya Yamamura
May 1 – Seibu vs Orix at Kyocera Dome Osaka
Bottom of the sixth inning, runner on first and one out. Kenya Wakatsuki made contact with the catcher and Yamamura called him out. He provided a complete explanation of the ruling over the PA system.

Hidetomo Ashihara
May 24 – Yakult vs Hanshin at Koshien Stadium
Bottom of the fourth inning. None on and two out. Yoshio Itoi grounded out to the pitcher. He ran inside the foul line and the ball thrown by the pitcher hit him. Ashihara called him out and gave an easy to understand explanation over the PA system.
