The media learned on May 23 that Tateki Abe will have Tommy John surgery at a hospital in Kanagawa within the next few days. Abe hurt his elbow during spring camp in February. He originally opted for non-invasive treatment, but recently decided to go with the surgery after discussions with the Yokohama Bay Stars.

[5/24/2016] Yomiuri Giants to make Ni-gun film available to players and coaches

The Yomiuri Giants are planning to install six video cameras around Giants Stadium. They will record games at the stadium from multiple angles. The footage will be available to all players and coaches in the organization over their tablets.

Camera locations

  • one behind home plate
  • two in the first base dugout
  • three in the third base dugout

The cameras will begin recording footage on June 3.

[5/24/2016] Matt Clark tied the knot in November

Matt Clark told Sponichi that he tied the knot with Julia Morales in November last year. The two were dating when Clark was a member of the Chunichi Dragons in 2013. She is hoping to visit Japan some time in July.

Clark is expected to make his Ni-gun debut with Orix some time this week, as soon as he gets his work visa.

[5/24/2016] Seibu Lions to meet with Ernesto Mejia’s agent

The media learned on May 23 that the Seibu Lions are planning to meet Ernesto Mejia’s agent, Peter Greenberg, within the next few days to discuss a possible contract extension.

Greenberg in currently in Japan and attended the Seibu-Lotte game at QVC Marine on May 19 and the Softbank-Seibu game at Seibu Prince Dome on May 22. He spoke to reporters and said Mejia was set to become a free agent after the season. Sanspo seems to think the Lions might be willing to go up to around 600 million yen a year (the same amount they paid Alex Cabrera in 2006 and 2007) to keep him in Saitama and away from other NPB teams.

Kimiyasu Kudo would like to use Shohei Otani as a two-way player during the upcoming All-Star games, but Hideki Kuriyama put that idea to rest when he told reporters there were no exceptions to Nippon Ham’s usage rules.

[5/24/2016] Kei Igawa is planning to join the Hyogo Blue Sandars

Thirty-six-year-old Kei Igawa is not ready to retire and is planning to join the Hyogo Blue Sandars out of the Baseball First League. Igawa has been practicing with the team since April and is close to being ready to play.

Igawa reportedly received offers from a number of teams, but may have picked Hyogo because of his connections: manager Akihiro Yamasaki is former teammate Sachiya Yamasaki’s father and coach Toshiyuki Tsuzuki used to be a trainer in the Hanshin organization when he played for the Tigers.
