[6/22/2016] Daisuke Matsuzaka tosses a bullpen session

Daisuke Matsuzaka (right hand) resumed throwing in the bullpen on June 22. He threw about fifteen pitches to a standing catcher in the indoor practice facilities at Chikugo. It was his first session since he pitched in a Ni-gun game on May 14. He is also up to playing catch at a distance of about forty meters.

[6/22/2016] Bigger shin guard for Shohei Otani

Shohei Otani will be getting a bigger shin guard after he gave the Nippon Ham Fighters a scare when he fouled a pitch off his right leg during a game against the Chunichi Dragons on June 19. The ball hit the area just above the guard.

Otani is currently using a shin guard that is about 23.5 centimeters long. His new guard is about 4.5 centimeters longer at twenty-eight centimeters.

[6/22/2016] Yoshinori Sato throws ninety-eight pitches over five innings in Ni-gun start

Yoshinori Sato (right shoulder) started a Ni-gun game against Yomiuri at Giants Stadium earlier today and gave up two runs (none earned) on three hits over five innings of work. He faced twenty-three hitters, threw ninety-eight pitches, walked two, struck out eight, and topped out at 151km/h.

Yoshinori retired the side in order in the first and second innings and racked up four strikeouts in the process. He gave up two unearned runs on two hits in the third inning. He walked two in the fourth, but managed to get out of the inning unscathed. He allowed a lead-off hit in the fifth, but did not get into any further trouble.

The Swallows were satisfied with Yoshinori’s performance and are planning to add him to their seventy-man roster. He could make the active roster in time for a start during a three-game Chunichi series that begins on July 8.

[6/22/2016] Cody Satterwhite tosses second bullpen session

Cody Satterwhite received his work visa on June 22. He wore his full Hanshin uniform during practices. He stepped into the bullpen for his second session since his arrival in Japan and threw twenty-eight pitches. He expected to toss batting practice before moving on to actual games.

[6/22/2016] Hiroaki Takaya may have suffered left knee injury

Hiroaki Takaya was taken off the active roster on June 19. He was examined at a hospital in Fukuoka on June 21 and was diagnosed with possible injuries to two areas of his left knee: the medial condyle of the femur and the meniscus.

[6/22/2016] Seiji Kobayashi diagnosed with fracture in left shoulder blade

Seiji Kobayashi hurt his left shoulder when he hit by a pitch during a game against the Rakuten Eagles at Tokyo Dome on June 16. He made the starting line-up against the Chiba Lotte Marines the following day, but then missed the next two games.

Kobayashi was examined at a hospital in Tokyo and diagnosed with a fracture in the infraspinatus fossa of the left scapula (left shoulder blade). He was taken off the active roster today.

Aaron Poreda has been working his way back from left upper arm tightness. He pitched in a batting practice scrimmage at Giants Stadium earlier today. His outing was cut short because he tweaked his right side (he could not throw the ball).
