[6/6/2016] Shohei Otani records a hit and strikes out ten in complete game victory

Shohei Otani struck out ten in a complete game victory against the Yomiuri Giants on June 5. He also batted fifth and went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

  • This was Otani’s ninth complete game victory, first in a game where he also batted for himself
  • Since 1950, Otani is the eighth pitcher to start a game and bat between three and five in the order.
  • Of the eight pitchers that started and batted between three and five, only two recorded wins: Otani and Fumio Fujimura on October 7, 1951. And of the two, only Otani recorded a hit.
  • Of the eight pitchers that started and batted between three and five, Otani became the first pitcher to record ten or more strikeouts. The previous high of four was set by Junzo Sekine on May 8, 1952 and Otani on June 18, 2013.
  • Otani moved passed Yukihiro Nishizaki (nineteen) into sole possession of second place on the franchise’s all-time list for double-digit strikeout games with twenty. Yu Darvish is in first with fifty-two.

[6/6/2016] Brandon Dickson drives in three

Brandon Dickson notched three RBI against the Yakult Swallows at Jingu Stadium on June 5. He joined Hideaki Wakui (2010) and Toshiya Sugiuchi (2011) as the only Pacific League pitchers to record three RBIs in an Inter-league game.

Dickson also became the first pitcher in franchise history to record three RBIs in a game since Hisashi Yamada on August 3, 1974 (before the introduction of the designated hitter rule).

According to Sponichi, Yoshihiro Maru is 26-for-50 (.520) with nine RBI in extra innings games since 2011.

Felipe Paulino made his Ni-gun debut today with a start against Rakuten at Seibu 2 Stadium. He pitched two innings, threw fifty pitches, and gave up two runs on two hits and three walks/HBPs. This was his first game in about two weeks.

[6/6/2016] Marcos Mateo could pitch in rehab game on June 11

Marcos Mateo (right shoulder) could pitch in a Ni-gun rehab game on June 11 against Yomiuri at Koshien Stadium. He is slated to toss a bullpen session within the next couple of days.

Mateo played catch at Naruohama for the third straight day on Sunday.

[6/5/2016] Shinji Tajima ties franchise record with thirty-one consecutive scoreless appearances

Shinji Tajima extended his scoreless games streak to thirty-one on June 5 and tied the franchise record set by Akifumi Takahashi in 2005. Tajima entered the game in the ninth inning against the Rakuten Eagles at Nagoya Dome and retired the side in order on eleven pitches.

The NPB record of thirty-eight consecutive scoreless appearances was set by Kyuji Fujikawa in 2006.

[6/5/2016] Eiichi Koyano leaves early after getting hit by pitch

Eiichi Koyano took a pitch off the area near his right wrist during his at bat in the top of the second inning against the Yakult Swallows at Jingu Stadium earlier today. He was removed on defense in the bottom half of the inning because he had a little trouble throwing. He is considered day-to-day.

Jose Adolis Garcia played in a Ni-gun game against Rakuten on June 5 at Giants Stadium and recorded his first home run in a Giants uniform.

Garcia was the starting designated hitter and batted lead-off. He homered to right off Takashi Kawai in his first trip to the plate.

Shohei Otani set a new NPB velocity record by hitting 163km/h. The pitch came in the bottom of the 4th against Yomiuri’s Luis Cruz (1-2 count, fourth pitch of the at bat, fifty-seventh pitch of the game).
