Shohei Otani hit 163km/h on the stadium radar gun twice in row against Tsuyoshi Nishioka in the first inning against the Hanshin Tigers (eighth and ninth pitches of the game, third and fourth pitches of the at bat). Nishioka watched the first pitch and fouled off the second pitch.

Otani also hit 163km/h with the:

  • first pitch he threw to the next batter, Mauro Gomez (eleventh pitch of the game) — swinging strike.
  • third pitch he threw to Ryutaro Umeno in the third inning (thirtieth pitch of the game) — fouled off.
  • fourth pitch he threw to Shun Takayama in the fifth inning (fifty-eighth pitch of the game) — fouled off.

Thirty-one of the 107 pitches Otani threw during the game were 160km/h or faster.


[6/12/2016] Toshiya Sugiuchi throws to standing catcher

Toshiya Sugiuchi (right hip) tossed a bullpen session at Giants Stadium today. It was his first session since his surgery last year.

Sugiuchi threw twenty-five pitches, including sliders, curveballs, and change-ups, to a standing catcher.

[6/12/2016] Aaron Poreda tosses bullpen session

Aaron Poreda (left upper arm) tossed a bullpen session at Giants Stadium earlier today. He threw seventy-one pitches, including sliders, curveballs, and splitters, to a squatting catcher. It was the first time he threw to a squatting catcher since his injury.

[6/12/2016] Takahiro Fujioka out with left elbow injury

Takahiro Fujioka was taken off the active roster today.

Fujioka felt discomfort in his left elbow during his outing on June 9 against the Hanshin Tigers at QVC Marine. He was examined at a hospital in Chiba on June 11 and diagnosed with an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his left elbow. He will require about two to three weeks for a full recovery.

[6/12/2016] Tetsuto Yamada first to twenty two years in a row

Tetsuto Yamada became the first player in the Central League to hit twenty home runs during a game against the Chiba Lotte Marines at QVC Marine on June 11.

  • Yamada recorded his twentieth home run in his team’s eighty-sixth game of the year last year. He reached twenty in his team’s sixty-fifth game this year.
  • Yamada is the first player in the Central League to make it twenty home runs in a season two years in a row since Wladimir Balentien in 2011 and 2012, the first Japanese player since Hideki Matsui in 1997 and 1998, and the first Japanese Yakult player since Takahiro Ikeyama in 1991 and 1992.

[6/12/2016] Hanshin Tigers to announce agreeement with Cody Satterwhite on June 13

According to Daily Sports, the Hanshin Tigers have reached an agreement with twenty-nine-year-old pitcher Cody Satterwhite. They are expected to make an official announcement on June 13. The Tigers have been looking for another pitcher to provide the bullpen with more stability, particularly the late-innings.

The Hanshin Tigers announced today that they reached an agreement with Satterwhite. The two sides agreed to a one-year deal worth an estimated 300,000 US dollars. He has not yet been assigned a uniform number.

Satterwhite is set to arrive in Japan on June 15. He will join the Ni-gun team for practices as soon as he gets his work visa.

[6/11/2016] Marcos Mateo pitches shutout inning in rehab game

Marcos Mateo pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game against Yomiuri at Koshien Stadium on June 11. He entered the game in the seventh and did not allow a run in an inning of work. He topped out at 152km/h.

[6/11/2016] Wataru Karashima pitches in Ni-gun rehab game

Wataru Karashima was working his way back from left shoulder inflammation when he also developed pain in his side. He pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game on June 11 against Yakult at Tendo. It was his first game since April 12.

Karashima entered the game in the fifth inning and gave up two runs on three hits over two innings of work. He struggled with his control and later told reporters it was due to a lack of throwing.

Toshiaki Imae (lower back) played in a rehab game against Yakult at Tendo on June 11. He got the start at third and batted third. He went 1-for-3 and hit a double to right in the fifth inning.

Yoshinori Sato (right shoulder) started a Ni-gun game against Rakuten at Tendo on June 11. He gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits over six innings. He threw ninety-nine pitches and topped out at 152km/h in the sixth inning.
