Wladimir Balentien got the start in left and batted fourth against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome today. He tweaked his left leg (adductor muscle) while chasing down a fly ball hit by Yohei Oshima in the bottom of the first inning. He was taken out of the game as a precaution. Shohei Otani left his start against Softbank at YafuOku Dome after getting Kenta Imamiya to ground out to second for the second out of the inning in the seventh inning with a popped blister on his right middle finger.

Takayuki Kishi left today’s game against Rakuten at Seibu Prince Dome after throwing six pitches to Hiroaki Shimauchi in the third inning (thirty-fourth pitch overall) because of discomfort in his right leg (adductor muscle). He was treated with ice and was not taken to the hospital.

The Lions are planning to take Kishi off the active roster on April 25. He is also slated to get checked out at a hospital on the same day.

The Japan High School Baseball Federation announced that the steering committee decided to push back the start of the finals game by an hour to 14:00 out of consideration for the Olympics. Assuming no rain outs, the finals game is scheduled to take place on the same day of the Rio Olympics’ closing ceremony (August 21).
The committee is also thinking about collecting donations for relief efforts in Kumamoto during the tournament.

Former Yomiuri Giant Koji Yamamoto died of liver cancer at 1:41pm on April 23 at his home in Kitakyushu. He was sixty-four. Memorial services will be held on April 26.
Yamamoto was selected by Yomiuri in the fifth round of the 1975 draft. He was later traded to Lotte in 1984 and retired in 1988. He remained in the Lotte organization as a hitting coach (1989-1993 Ichi-gun, 1994 Ni-gun, 1995-1996 Ichi-gun) before moving up to manager (1997-1998 Ni-gun, 1999-2003 Ichi-gun). He returned to the Yomiuri organization for two years and then became a baseball analyst and commentator. He started taking things slow in 2008 because heart problems.
