[5/23/2016] Taiki Mitsumata could take on emergency back-up catcher role

Taiki Mitsumata borrowed Iori Katsura’s equipment and worked out as a catcher during practices earlier today. He first played some catch with the gear on, and then set up behind the plate during batting practice. He showed a strong arm with some throws to second. He is slated to get some playing time at catcher during Ni-gun games this week.

Mitsumata is not completely without catching experience — he caught a few practice games when he was in high school.

Takuma Kato was taken off the active roster today to make room for Shinnosuke Ogasawara. Kato was the third catcher. The Dragons are hoping Mitsumata will be able to take on the role as emergency back-up catcher.

The Yomiuri Giants decided to take Garrett Jones off the active roster after his 0-for-4 (three strikeouts) and two error outing on May 22 against the Chunichi Dragons at Nagoya Dome. The Giants may have been able to look the other way if his production at the plate was better, but after his first modasho (three or more hits in one game) of the year on May 14, he has gone 4-for-20 (three singles and a triple) with eight strikeouts.

Leslie Anderson (left elbow) could get a shot on the active roster. He got the start at first and hit a two-run home run during a Eastern League Challenge Match against the Futures at Giants Stadium on May 22. He also recorded a double in his first rehab game on May 19.

Kazuki Yoshimi had surgery on his right elbow for the fifth time in his career last fall. He got at least ten days of rest for his first four starts of the season out of concern for the elbow, but on Sunday, he took the mound against the Yomiuri Giants on six days of rest. He threw eighty-two pitches over five innings and picked up his first win since May 9, 2015. Assuming no issues, he will most likely shift over to a schedule of starts on six days of rest.
