[4/14/2016] Kenshi Sugiya will have surgery on his right hand

The Fighters announced today that Kenshi Sugiya will have surgery to remove hamate bone fragments from his right hand on April 20. The organization will know more about how much time he will require for a full recovery after the procedure, but it could take six to eight weeks for a full recovery.

[4/14/2016] Daisuke Matsuzaka tosses a shutout inning at Ni-gun

Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched in a rehab game at Ni-gun against Hanshin at Naruohama on April 14. He entered the game in the seventh inning and did not allow a run over an inning of work. He threw fourteen pitches, gave up one hit, and topped out at 143km/h. It was his first outing an exhibition game against Seibu on March 16.

[4/14/2016] Hayato Sakamoto left out of the starting line-up with leg problems

Hayato Sakamoto was left out of the starting line-up against Yakult on April 13 because of problems with his legs. He still managed to make it into the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning (timely single to left). His status moving forward is uncertain.

[4/14/2016] What Hanshin could be looking for in this year’s draft

According to a report by Daily Sports, the Hanshin Tigers are primarily looking at three types of players for the 2016 draft:

  • immediate help, right-handed pitcher – someone to complement Shintaro Fujinami in the starting rotation
  • left-handed hitting short stop – someone to take over after Takashi Toritani
  • high school, left-handed pitcher – the next Atsushi Nomi

[4/14/2016] Fujikawa taken off active roster for a tune-up

Kyuji Fujikawa will be taken off the active roster on April 14 for a tune-up. Fujikawa was originally scheduled to make his next start on April 17 against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome, but Minoru Iwata will get the start after his game against Hanshin at Koshien was rained out on April 13. If Fujikawa returns in the minimum, he could make his next start on April 24 against Hiroshima at Mazda Stadium.

Ryosuke Ogata will take Fujikawa’s spot on the active roster.

[4/14/2016] Dragons not planning to rush Ryosuke Hirata

The media learned on April 13 that the Dragons are not planning to rush Ryosuke Hirata (left hip) because they want him back at 100 percent when he returns. He is also expected to play in a couple of rehab games at Ni-gun before they consider calling him up. Based on the current schedule, his first rehab game could come during a three-game Softbank series that begins on April 19. That could put his return to the active roster some time after April 21.

[4/14/2016] Daisuke Matsuzaka could pitch in a rehab game today

Daisuke Matsuzaka will most likely pitch in a rehab game at Ni-gun on April 14 against Hanshin at Naruohama. Whether he makes it into the game will depend on his condition and the weather. If he pitches, it will most likely be one inning.

Matsuzaka has not pitched in a game since March 16 (exhibition game against Seibu at Seibu Prince Dome).

Takero Okajima tweaked his lower back while swinging the bat in the fourth inning against Lotte at kobo Stadium on April 13. He was replaced after the at bat as a precaution. The Eagles will decide what to do next after they see how he is feeling on April 14.

Shohei Tateyama gave up six runs (all earned) on eleven hits and a walk over five innings of work against the Yomiuri Giants at Jingu Stadium on April 14. The Swallows will send Tateyama down to Ni-gun for a tune-up.

[4/13/2016] Kazuo Matsui returns to the starting line-up

Kazuo Matsui hurt his right knee when he ran into Zelous Wheeler while playing defense during a game against Lotte at QVC Marine on March 29. He returned to the starting line-up on April 13 for the first time since the injury.
