[11/3/2018] Softbank Hawks win second Nippon Series in a row

The Softbank Hawks blanked the Hiroshima Carp, 2-0, tonight and won the 2018 Nippon Series.

Series Awards:

  • MVP – Takuya Kai (Softbank)
  • Excellent Player – Yuito Mori (Softbank)
  • Excellent Player – Yuki Yanagita (Softbank)
  • Excellent Player – Akira Nakamura (Softbank)

Some notes:

  • The Hiroshima Carp failed to win their first Nippon Series since 1984.
  • The Central League has not won a Nippon Series since the Yomiuri Giants beat the Nippon Ham Fighters in 2012.
  • The Softbank Hawks have won four of the last five Nippon Series.
  • The Hawks have recorded a Nippon Series against all six Central League teams.
    • Yomiuri (1959), Hanshin (1964, 2003, 2014), Chunichi (1999, 2011), Yakult (2015), Yokohama (2017).
  • Kimiyasu Kudo was tossed into the air fifteen times.
    • Kudo has been on fourteen Nippon Series winning teams, eleven times as a player and three times as a manager.

[10/21/2018] Softbank Hawks to take on Hiroshima Carp at Nippon Series

The Softbank Hawks beat the Seibu Lions tonight, 6-5, and won the Final Stage of the Climax Series. They will advance to the Nippon Series for the eighteenth time in franchise history and face the Hiroshima Carp. The Hawks are the first non-first-place-team in the Pacific League to advance to the Nippon Series since Lotte in 2010.

The Hawks celebrated their victory by going through 3000 bottles of beer, four barrels of sake, sixty bottles of sake, and 480 bottles of cola in about twenty minutes. (Tokyo Sports 10/21/2018, Nikkan Sports 10/21/2018, Sponichi 10/21/2018)

Yuki Yanagita was named MVP of the series.

The Nippon Series will start on October 27 at Mazda Stadium.

[10/19/2018] Hiroshima advances to 2018 Nippon Series

The Hiroshima Carp completed a sweep by defeating the Yomiuri Giants at Mazda Stadium tonight by the score of 5-1. The Carp will advance to their first Nippon Series in two years.

Ryosuke Kikuchi was named MVP of the series.

The Nippon Series will start on October 27.

Notes

  • Best of seven (first to win four games)
  • Innings will be limited to twelve through game 7. There will be no limit on innings if additional games are needed.
  • Schedule adjustments in the case of postponements
    • Game 1, 2 postponements – games will be played at the Game 1, 2 stadium and the schedule will shift with a travel date between Games 2 and 3 and no travel date between Games 5 and 6.
    • Game 3 and on postponements – games will be played at the respective stadiums and the schedule will shift with no travel date between Games 5 and 6.
    • If there are extenuating circumstances, travel dates will be scheduled between Games 2 and 3 and Games 5 and 6. (This rule will be used if Hiroshima and Nippon Ham make it to the Nippon Series.)
  • If there are ties and Game 7 ends without a winner, a Game 8 will be scheduled at the Game 7 stadium. If a Game 9 is needed, a travel date will be added and the game will be played at the Game 5 stadium.
  • Designated hitters will be used at Pacific League home games.
  • Six umpires will work each game.

  • Yakult: Games 1, 2, 6, 7 – 18:00
  • Yomiuri: Games 1, 2, 6, 7 – 18:10

The NPB announced today that Mitsui Sumitomo Ginko (Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation) will sponsor the Nippon Series this year. The bank has been a series sponsor since 2014.
