Attendance for the opening ceremony was announced at 44,000 (up 2,000 from last year). Source: Nikkan Sports 3/19/2017

There was a mix-up with substitutions in the Riseisha vs NichiDaiSan game: Shuto Sakurai was sent to center field after he walked the first batter in the ninth inning. He remained in center for three batters then returned to the mound. He was sent back to center after he gave up three consecutive hits. According to the rule book, a pitcher can only move to a different position once in a the same inning. When they return to the mound for a second time in the same inning, they can finish the inning or be replaced Source: Daily Sports 3/19/2017, Nikkan Sports 3/19/2017

A steering committee meeting for the 89th Spring Koshien was held in Osaka earlier today. Among things that were discussed/decided/confirmed:

  • Gen Hoshino’s Koi will be this year’s opening procession song.
  • There are 128 candidate schools for the tournament (119 regular, nine twenty-five century).
  • The list of participating schools (twenty-nine regular, three twenty-first century) will be unveiled on January 27 (Fri).
  • Brackets selections will start at 9:00am on March 10 (Fri).
  • Female managers (assistants) will be allowed to participate in practices if they abide by certain rules. Specifics still need to be worked out, but will likely include things like wearing a helmet and being limited to areas covered by artificial turf.
