89th Spring Koshien Practice Schedule

The Senbatsu Tournament Committee release Koshien Stadium practice schedules today. Practices will begin on March 14. Each team will have thirty minutes on the field. Each day will start at 9:00am.

[1/11/2017] 89th Spring Koshien Steering Committee Meeting

A steering committee meeting for the 89th Spring Koshien was held in Osaka earlier today. Among things that were discussed/decided/confirmed:

  • Gen Hoshino’s Koi will be this year’s opening procession song.
  • There are 128 candidate schools for the tournament (119 regular, nine twenty-five century).
  • The list of participating schools (twenty-nine regular, three twenty-first century) will be unveiled on January 27 (Fri).
  • Brackets selections will start at 9:00am on March 10 (Fri).
  • Female managers (assistants) will be allowed to participate in practices if they abide by certain rules. Specifics still need to be worked out, but will likely include things like wearing a helmet and being limited to areas covered by artificial turf.

[12/16/2016] 89th Summer Koshien: 21st Century Candidate Schools

The Japan High School Baseball Federation released a list of nine 21st Century candidate schools earlier today. Three schools will be selected by a committee on January 27, 2017. The selected schools will be able to participate in the 89th Spring Koshien next year.

[9/7/2016] Preliminary details for 89th Spring Koshien

The Steering Committee for the 89th Spring Koshien met in Osaka today to go over details of next year’s tournament.

  • Date: Twelve days beginning on March 19 (includes day off)
  • Venue: Koshien Stadium
  • Number of Schools: 32 slots
    • 28 x general slots
      • 1 x Hokkaido
      • 2 x Tohoku
      • 6 x Kanto/Tokyo
      • 2 x Tokai
      • 2 x Hokushinetsu
      • 6 x Kinki
      • 5 x Chugoku/Shikoku
      • 4 x Kyushu
    • 3 x twenty-first century slots
    • 1 x  Jingu Tournament winner slot
  • Schools will be selected by a Selection Committee on January 27, 2017
  • Bracket Lottery will be held on March 10, 2017

[7/6/2016] 89th Spring Koshien preliminary details

The steering committee for the 89th Spring Koshien met in Osaka on July 6 and decided on/confirmed the following:

  • There will be twenty-eight regular brackets with four special brackets for a total thirty-two brackets. (no change)
  • The twenty-eight regular brackets will be broken down into: Hokkaido (one), Tohoku (two), Kanto/Tokyo (six), Tokai (two), Hokushinetsu (two), Kinki (six), Chugoku/Shikoku (five), and Kyushi (four). The four special brackets will be broken down into: Twenty-first Century (three), Jingu Tournament (one). (no change from this year)
