[8/15/2017] 99th Summer Koshien: Today’s games postponed due to rain

Today’s Summer Koshien games have been postponed due to rain. The decision was made by tournament organizers at 6:05am. Games on the schedule will be pushed back a day. The Finals game will now be played on August 23.

[8/6/2017] 99th Summer Koshien: Start Delayed Due to Typhoon

Summer Koshien organizers announced at 11:00am today that the start of the tournament will be pushed back one day due to Typhoon #5. This is the fourth time opening ceremonies were canceled or delayed in tournament history. The other three times: The sixth (1920), forty-second (1960), and ninety-sixth (2014) tournaments.

[8/5/2017] Summer Koshien set to start on August 7

The Summer Koshien is set to begin on August 7. Opening ceremony rehearsals will take place on August 6. The Players Oath will be presented by Takikawa Nishi’s Masato Hotta.

The Japan High School Baseball Federation announced today that 170 pitchers from the forty-nine participating schools were examined (shoulders and elbows) and none had to be banned from pitching.

99th Summer Koshien: Practice Schedule (Complete)

Practice Schedule

Each school will be allowed to use Koshien Stadium for practices for thirty minutes. The remaining schedule will be added once it becomes available.

[7/21/2017] Koshien Stadium practices for Summer Koshien

The Japan High School Baseball Federation announced today that Koshien Stadium practices for the Summer Koshien will take place between August 1 and 4. Schools participating in the tournament will each have thirty minutes of practice time.

[4/19/2017] Fifty-six high schools to participate in 100th Summer Koshien

The steering committee for the Summer Koshien met in Osaka today and decided that the 2018 Summer Koshien will feature a tournament-high fifty-six high schools as part of its 100th anniversary celebration. The decision will be approved during a board of directors meeting on April 26.

Regions that will have with an extra bracket (total two):

  • Saitama
  • Chiba
  • Kanagawa
  • Aichi
  • Osaka
  • Hyogo
  • Fukuoka

In other related news:

  • Brackets for this year’s Summer Koshien will be selected on August 4. The committee decided today that they will go back to setting the schedule for the first three rounds (instead of first two rounds) during initial bracket selections. The committee feels they can improve security assignments if schedules are set before the start of the tournament.
  • The 100th Summer Koshien will take place over seventeen days, beginning on August 5, 2018. Bracket selections will be made on August 2.
  • The deadline to decide whether or not to introduce tie-break rules to the Spring/Summer Koshien next year is late-November.
