The Chiba Lotte Marines are expected to sign thirty-three-year-old pitcher Kenji Otonari, twenty-nine-year-old Francisco Peguero, and twenty-nine-year-old Tu-Hsuan Lee. All three players are attending spring camp as tryouts.
Otonari pitched in an intra-squad game on February 12. He pitched one inning, faced five hitters, and allowed a run on two hits and a walk. Peguero and Lee each had good intra-squad games on February 11: Peguero went 1-for-2 with a home run and Lee went 2-for-4 with a home run. Both players went hitless (Peguero 0-for-4 and Lee 0-for-2) on February 12.

The Chiba Lotte Marines announced today that they finalized a contract with Hideaki Wakui on January 29. Wakui reached out to Lotte on January 27. The two sides worked out a framework last year and Wakui’s agent finalized the details.
The Marines released the following statement from Wakui:
I signed a contract last night. I had decided I would make a decision by spring camp in Japan when I exercised my free agent option. The time came for a decision and the desire to help Iguchi win a championship with my beloved Marines grew stronger. With the contract signed, my thoughts now are with the Marines. My training has gone well and I feel great. I will do my best to make this a year.
[UPDATE 1/31 @ 4:38pm]
According to media reports from this morning, Wakui agreed to a one-year deal worth an estimated 200 million yen (down fifty million from last year).

According to a number of reports, thirty-one-year-old Hideaki Wakui is planning to stay with the Chiba Lotte Marines. Wakui exercised his free agent option this off-season with hopes of playing in the Majors. Unnamed sources have told the media that the pitcher may have received a number of offers, but none at the MLB-level. An official announcement could be made on January 29.
Wakui could wait a little longer to see how things play out, but spring camp in Japan is about to begin. Missing spring camp would not be the end of the world, but would not be ideal. Wakui might be feeling some pressure to make a decision now because Lotte has kept the window open for him without setting any concrete deadlines.
[UPDATE 1/29 @ 10:56pm]
Wakui confirmed to the media on January 28 that reports of his decision to stay with Lotte from January 27 were true and that he wanted to make it to the first day of spring camp on February 1.0 Comments
