[1/7/2019] Hiroshima selects Hisayoshi Chono as part of FA comp package

The Yomiuri Giants and Hiroshima Carp announced that thirty-four-year-old Hisayoshi Chono will be heading to Hiroshima as part of a compensation package for losing Yoshihiro Maru to the Giants via free agency. The Carp will also get fifty percent of Maru’s salary from 2018 (an estimated 150 million yen).

The Carp announced that Chono was assigned the uniform number 5. He was also offered the number 9, but turned it down because he feels it will look better on Takayoshi Noma in the future. The uniform 9 was worn by Yoshihiro Maru between 2014 and 2018.

[12/20/2018] Daichi Takeyasu heading to Orix as FA compensation package

The Orix Buffaloes and Hanshin Tigers announced that the Buffaloes selected twenty-four-year-old Daichi Takeyasu as part of their free agent compensation package for Yuki Nishi. The Tigers released the following comment from Takeyasu.

I’m surprised by this sudden development. The Tigers selected me in the draft even though I was hurt, so it pains me to leave like this, but I will refocus my efforts as a member of Orix and will do my best to become a pitcher that can make Orix fans happy.

[12/20/2018] Seibu selects Tetsuya Utsumi as part of FA compensation

The Seibu Lions and Yomiuri Giants announced today that the Lions selected thirty-six-year-old Tetsuya Utsumi as part of their free agent compensation package for Ginjiro Sumitani. The Giants released the following statement from Utsumi:

Being a part of the Giants over the last fifteen years, with support from the best fans in Japan, is my greatest memory. I am grateful to all my teammates. I take great pride in the things I have accomplished with this amazing team, like leading the league in wins and being a player rep. I will apply everything I learned with the Giants and do my best with the new team I will be joining. To the Giants, I look forward to facing you at the Nippon Series. To the fans, please continue to support me.

[12/18/2017] Seibu Lions take Hayato Takagi as FA compensation

The Seibu Lions and Yomiuri Giants announced today that the Lions selected twenty-eight-year-old pitcher Hayato Takagi as part of their compensation package for losing thirty-year-old pitcher Ryoma Nogami to the Giants via free agency.

Takagi spent three years in the Yomiuri organization after being selected in the third round of the 2014 draft. In sixty-seven games and 308.0 innings of work, he went 15-21 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.

[12/12/2017] Nippon Ham Fighters receive list of players from Orix Buffaloes

Nippon Ham Fighters’ General Manager Hiroshi Yoshimura told reporters on December 11 that they received a list of unprotected players from the Orix Buffaloes (free agent compensation for Hirotoshi Masui). They will decide what to do once they also receive a list from the Chunichi Dragons (free agent compensation for Shota Ono).

According to Tokyo Sports, the Fighters wanted Hitoki Iwase as compensation for losing Ono, but backed off after the veteran threatened to retire. The Dragons left Iwase off their list of protected players because they did not think the Fighters would pick him.

[12/11/2017] Seibu Lions receive list of players from Yomiuri Giants

Seibu Lions’ official Haruhiko Suzuki told the media on December 11 that they received a list of unprotected players from the Yomiuri Giants. The Lions will check the list to see if there is a player they want as part of their compensation package for losing Ryoma Nogami. They are hoping to reach a decision by December 25.

[12/10/2017] Hanshin Tigers select Yuya Onaka as FA compensation

The Hanshin Tigers told the media on December 9 that they received a list of unprotected players from the Yokohama Bay Stars. The two teams announced today that the Tigers selected twenty-two-year-old Yuya Onaka as part of their compensation package for losing Yamato to the Bay Stars via free agency.

Yokohama selected Onaka in the sixth round of the 2016 draft out of Hiroshima Keizai University. He pitched in eleven Ichi-gun games this season, all in relief, and allowed sixteen runs (fourteen earned) over 19.1 innings of work. He went 1-1 with a 6.52 ERA and 1.91 WHIP.
