[10/11/2018] Tomoaki Kanemoto to step down as manager

Tomoaki Kanemoto will be stepping down as manager of the Hanshin Tigers after the season. Kanemoto told reporters today that there will still many things he wanted to do, but felt he had to resign because results were everything. The Tigers asked him to stay after last night’s game, but he declined. Kanemoto was in the first year of a three-year contract.

  • Kanemoto told Team President Kenji Ageshio about his decision after last night’s game.
  • Kanemoto is stepping down because of the team’s performance.
  • Kanemoto first started thinking about stepping down after the team secured a last place finish.
  • Ageshio suggested Kanemoto try a little more, but he was already set in his decision. The last place finish was a big factor.
  • Team Owner Shinya Sakai is planning to hold a press conference later today.

Sakai held a press conference today and announced that he plans to relinquish his role as owner of the team. He will retain the position until November 30.

Notes

  • Sakai spent ten years as owner and turned seventy this year. He started thinking about moving on from owner before the start of the regular season. It was somewhat of a coincidence that it happened at the same time Kanemoto decided to step down.
  • Sakai feel responsible for the team’s performance and apologized for not being able to provide with the support he needed. He plans to meet Kanemoto to express his feelings.
  • Sakai took over as owner in 2008. He was responsible for hiring Kanemoto.
  • This is the first time a Hanshin manager and owner stepped down at the same time since 1984.
  • Takaoki Fujiwara is expected to take over as the new owner.
