2018 NPB Fine Judge Awards

Four NPB umpires were recognized for their work on the field this season.

Naoto Shikita
April 12 – Yokohama vs Yomiuri at Tokyo Dome
Top of the first inning, runners on first and second and two out. Single to center. Play at the plate. Runner appeared to be out, but Shikita was able to tell the runner was safe from the angle where he stood.

Shinji Hashimoto
April 22 – Hiroshima vs Chunichi at Nagoya Dome
Bottom of the third inning, runners on first and no out. Yota Kyoda attempted a bunt. Hashimoto noticed Kyoda’s leg was outside of the batter’s box and called him out.

Hiroya Yamamura
May 1 – Seibu vs Orix at Kyocera Dome Osaka
Bottom of the sixth inning, runner on first and one out. Kenya Wakatsuki made contact with the catcher and Yamamura called him out. He provided a complete explanation of the ruling over the PA system.

Hidetomo Ashihara
May 24 – Yakult vs Hanshin at Koshien Stadium
Bottom of the fourth inning. None on and two out. Yoshio Itoi grounded out to the pitcher. He ran inside the foul line and the ball thrown by the pitcher hit him. Ashihara called him out and gave an easy to understand explanation over the PA system.

[6/16/2018] Home plate umpire Naoto Shikita leaves game early

Home plate umpire Naoto Shikita collapsed while working the Chunichi-Seibu game at MetLife Dome on June 16. The game was delayed for about seven minutes while Shikita was examined and taken off the field on a stretcher. Shikita collapsed due to pain caused by a foul-tip that hit his left knee.

Third base umpire Masao Yanada took over at home plate after Shikita’s departure. Alternate umpire Tetsuya Shimata took over at third.

[3/27/2018] Three companies to supply NPB umpire gear

The NPB announced on March 26 that they signed three companies to official umpire supplier contracts. All three contracts are for three years.

Umpire uniforms were also updated for the 2018 season.

  • Uniforms – SSK
  • Protective Gear – Amer Sports Japan (Wilson)
  • Cleats – Mizuno, SSK

2017 NPB Fine Judge Awards

Four NPB umpires were recognized for their work on the field this season.

Kinji Nishimoto
June 6 – Yokohama vs Rakuten at Yamagata
Top of the sixth inning, runner on first, one out, and Yokohama up 9-1. Takayuki Kajitani stole second. In the top of the 8th inning, Nishimoto warned both benches when Rakuten aggressively started throwing inside on Kajitani.

Takayuki Ichikawa
June 25 – Rakuten vs Nippon Ham at Sapporo Dome
Top of the seventh inning, runner on first and one out. Ryo Hijirisawa’s bat hit the ball for a second time in fair territory. Ichikawa called offensive interference. He quickly and accurately handled the situation and announcement.

Masanobu Suginaga
August 1 – Hanshin vs Hiroshima at Mazda Stadium
Top of the ninth inning, runner on first and one out. The runner on first attempted to steal second as the batter struck out swinging. The catcher attempted a throw to second, but the batter got in the way. Suginaga called interference, ruled the runner out, and the game ended. He made a good call on a difficult play.

Kazuaki Nako
September 25 – Rakuten vs Softbank at YafuOku Dome
Top of the eighth inning, runners on first and second and no out. A hit resulted in a close play at home plate. The runner got his hand on home plate just in time and was appropriately ruled safe.

[6/5/2017] Fifth NPB Umpire School

The NPB posted information about its fifth NPB Umpire School.

  • When: December 16 (Sat) – 22 (Fri)
  • Where: Lotte Urawa Stadium and Plaza Hotel Urawa
  • Fee: 83,000 yen (includes taxes, meals, and room)
  • Requirements: high school degree, including people graduating in March 2018
  • Openings: sixty-five
  • Deadline: August 31 (Thu)

[12/14/2016] NPB signs two umpires to development contracts

The NPB announced that they signed twenty-three-year-old Ryosuke Noda and nineteen-year-old Taiki Matsumoto to umpire development contracts, effective January 1. Noda was assigned to the Eastern League (Kanto) and Matsumoto to the Western League (Kansai).

Noda and Matsumoto are graduates of last year’s NPB Umpire School. They were dispatched to the BC League and Shikoku Island League, respectively, this year. They will have a chance to become full-fledged umpires based on their performance during Ni-gun games.

The NPB will be holding their fourth Umpire School this year between December 17 (Sat) and 23 (Fri) at Lotte Urawa Stadium.

[12/14/2016] 2016 NPB Fine Judge Awards

Four NPB umpires were recognized for their work on the field this season.

Kyohei Makita
March 30 – Yomiuri vs Yokohama at Yokohama Stadium
Runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Runner on third started for home on a grounder to second. The ball made it to home plate in time to get the runner, but the runner managed to evade the tag and Makita made the correct safe call.

Hideshi Honda
April 19 – Hiroshima vs Yokohama at Yokohama Stadium
Bases loaded with one out in the top of the twelfth inning. The runner on second attempted to score on a hit. Despite the long game, Honda maintained his focus on the play and the runner was properly called safe.

Tomoya Ishiyama
May 17 – Yokohama vs Yomiuri at Shonai Ginko/Nissin Seiyaku Stadium Yamagata
Runners on first and third and one out in the top of the sixth inning. The runner on third attempted to score on a grounder to first. The runner slid under the tag and Ishiyama took his time and made the correct safe call.

Chikara Tsugawa
September 2 – Seibu vs Lotte at QVC Marine Field
Runners on first and second and no out in the top of the twelfth inning. On a line drive to short, the shortstop gloved then dropped the ball. Tsugawa ruled the play an intentionally dropped ball and the batter was ruled out and the ball dead with runners returning to their bases.
