The San-gun Yomiuri Giants beat Tokyo University 12-8 in an exhibition game on August 25. Toshiki Sakurai started the game for Yomiuri and gave up seven runs (four earned) on eleven hits over six innings of work. He faced thirty-two hitters, threw 108 pitches, and struck out nine.
Abner Abreu got the start in right and batted clean-up for the Giants. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one stolen base. He hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Catcher Shingo Usami batted sixth and went 2-for-4 with three RBI. He blasted a solo home run in the eighth.

Toshiki Sakurai (right elbow) started a San-gun game against the BC League’s Fukushima Hopes earlier today. He gave up three runs on five hits and three walks over four innings of work. He also struck out four.

Toshiki Sakurai (right elbow) started a San-gun game against Softbank on July 23. He tossed three shutout innings, gave up one hit, walked none, and struck out two. He is expected to pitch at least five innings during his next start on July 30 against Yokohama at Giants Stadium. Sakurai could make it back to the active roster some time in August.

Toshiki Sakurai (right elbow) started a San-gun practice game against the BC League’s Toyama GRN Thunderbirds on July 16. He pitched two innings, allowed a run on two hits, walked/hit two, and struck out none. He threw forty pitches and topped out at 143km/h. This was his first game since March 30 (vs Yokohama at Yokohama Stadium).

He faced twelve hitters, threw forty-four pitches, allowed two could-be hits, and topped out at 146km/h. Assuming no setback, he could be ready to pitch in a rehab game at San-gun some time between July 15 and 17.

Toshiki Sakurai tossed a bullpen session today. He threw twenty fastballs to a squatting catcher. It was his second session in as many days, first to a squatting catcher. He told reporters he no longer felt discomfort in the elbow.
Sakurai is expected to add off-speed pitches during his next session after May 16. He is hoping to make it back to the active roster in June.

Sakurai threw ten pitches to a standing catcher, then fifteen with the catcher on one knee. All twenty-five pitches were fastballs.
