[10/19/2018] Takumi Akiyama has surgery on right knee

Takumi Akiyama had surgery to clean out his right knee at a hospital in Osaka. The Hanshin Tigers announced that Akiyama was discharged from the hospital on October 18. Akiyama started having problems with his knee after he picked up his fifth victory of the year on June 7.

[8/5/2017] Takumi Akiyama leaves start with hamstring tightness

Takumi Akiyama felt tightness in his right hamstring while pitching in the third inning of today’s game against the Yakult Swallows at Kyocera Dome. He was removed from the game and later examined at a hospital in Kobe. The Hanshin Tigers are expected to get results of his test some time on or after August 6.

Akiyama struck out the first two batters he faced in the third inning. He then walked Tomotaka Sakaguchi on nine pitches and called for a time out. Pitching coach Isao Koda and a team trainer visited him on the mound and pulled him from the game.

Akiyama was able to participate in pre-game practices today. He played some catch and did some running. He did not experience any major issues. He will most likely remain with the team for the time being. The Tigers will closely monitor his progress.

If the Tigers feel Akiyama is okay, he could get a start during a three-game series against Yokohama at Yokohama that begins on August 11.

May 8 vs Yomiuri at Tokyo Dome – Akiyama recorded a shutout victory and hit a home run. He became the first pitcher to toss a shutout victory and hit a home run in the same game since Colby Lewis against Yakult on September 9, 2009 and the first Hanshin pitcher since Kazuyuki Yamamoto against Yomiuri on April 29, 1982.
