Aoyagi grew up drinking Yakult products. His mother and brother work at Yakult and he spent time in the company nursery until he was about three.

Aoyagi threw from about three-quarters the first time he played catch for the Terao Dolphins when he was fifth year elementary school student. The manager of the team tried to fix his mechanics, but eventually decided to encourage him to keep throwing from the side.

Aoyagi is an avid manga fan. When he first joined the Tigers, he moved into their dormitory with about 300 mangas. Publisher Kodansha is thinking about naming him their managa publicity ambassador.

Koyo Aoyagi picked up a win in his first Ichi-gun appearance/start on June 1 against Rakuten at kobo Stadium.
- He is the fourth rookie pitcher this season to win his first Ichi-gun appearance/start. The other three: Hiroki Yokoyama (March 30 against Chunichi), Yu Sato (May 10 against Yokohama), and Ryota Sekiya (May 21 against Orix).
- He is the twelfth Hanshin rookie pitcher to win his first Ichi-gun appearance/start, first since Suguru Iwazaki on April 2, 2014.
- He is the first right-handed Hanshin pitcher to win in his first Ichi-gun start/appearance since Minoru Murayama on April 14, 1959.
- He is the third rookie pitcher to win his first Ichi-gun appearance/start during Inter-league play. The other two: Yu Darvish (June 15, 2005 against Hiroshima) and Kenji Otonari (June 9, 2007 against Hiroshima).
