[2/22/2017] Shota Sugiyama bitten by small dog

Shota Sugiyama was bit by dog on February 21. He was running around Chatan Stadium when a small dog bit his lower left leg. The wound was treated, but apparently not serious, since he did not require a hospital visit. He participated in practices as usual on February 22.

[7/28/2016] Shota Sugiyama shows symptoms of a concussion

Shota Sugiyama was taken off the active roster on July 27 with symptoms of a concussion (he was hit in the head by a bat on July 24). He was fine on July 26, but experienced temporary vision issues the following day.

The Chunichi Dragons have exercised the concussion exception with Sugiyama: if he is cleared of any issues, he will be able to return to the active roster before his ten days are up.

[7/24/2016] Shota Sugiyama leaves game after getting hit with a bat

Shota Sugiyama took a blow to the head while catching in the fifth inning of today’s game against the Yakult Swallows. Wladimir Balentien took a big swing on a breaking curve and hit Sugiyama in the head with his backswing.

Sugiyama was taken off on a stretcher and taken to a hospital in Nagakute, Aichi for an evaluation. There was some external bleeding, but he was able to get up and his speech was not slurred or incoherent. He knew his name, age, and uniform number. Tests did not reveal any abnormalities to the brain. He was diagnosed with a bruise on the left side of his head.

Shota Sugiyama, Chunichi (First Time)

April 16 vs Hanshin at Nagoya Dome. Bottom of the 9th down 3-2 with the bases loaded and one out. Sugiyama recorded a walk-off double to center. The offense was held scoreless over the first seven innings of the game. They managed to plate two runs in the eighth. He swung at the first pitch he saw and picked up the first walk-off hit of his career.

Yuki Yoshimura, Softbank (First Time)

April 17 vs Rakuten at YafuOku Dome. Bottom of the 12th inning with the score tied at seven and a runner on first and no out. Yoshimura blasted a walk-off two-run home run to left-center. He also hit a three-run home run to tie the game in the 9th.
