Alfredo Despaigne hurt his right hamstring while trying to score from second on a double to right-center, hit by Nobuhiro Matsuda in the third inning of today’s game against the Hanshin Tigers. He hurt the hamstring in between third and home plate. He was able to score, but dragged his right leg while doing so. He remained in the game until he was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the fifth (he got the start at designated hitter).
Despaigne was taken to a hospital in Fukuoka for tests. He was diagnosed with a strain in his right hamstring. He will be taken off the active roster tomorrow.

Cuban Ambassador to Japan Carlos Miguel Pereira Hernandez was quoted by a Cuba radio station as saying that it will take Despaigne at least twenty-five days for a full recovery. Kimiyasu Kudo told reporters after the game on June 11 that he wanted the slugger to make his recovery a top priority. He could end up missing the first-half of the season.

The Softbank Hawks announced today that they reached an agreement with thirty-year-old Alfredo Despaigne. He was assigned the uniform number 54. The Hawks released the following statement from Despaigne:
I am happy for the opportunity to play for the Softbank Hawks, Japan’s strongest team. I feel this is a new start for me. I hope to make good use of my past experiences and will do my best to help the team win a championship.
To the Hawks fans: I will do my best to hit as many home runs as I can so please come out to the stadium.
According to media reports, the two sides agreed to a three-year deal worth an estimated 1.2 billion yen (or an estimated 400 million yen a year).

The media learned on January 30 that the Softbank Hawks are planning to make a formal offer for Alfredo Despaigne in February. Despaigne will be participating in the Caribbean Series. The Hawks are expected to approach Cuba once the series is over.

The Chiba Lotte Marines officially announced today that they dropped out of the running for Alfredo Despaigne because the price tag was too high. The Marines’ last offer may have been a three-year deal worth over one billion yen.
Lotte will now focus their attention on other overseas options. They are hoping to sign someone before the start of spring camp.

The Hawks are the favorites to land Despaigne now that the Marines officially announced their decision not to offer him a contract for the 2017 season. They could offer three years between 1.2 and 1.5 billion yen.
Despaigne is currently spending some time in Japan with his family. He will be here until the end of this week.

Despaigne became a free agent after Lotte removed him from their reserved list on December 21. The media learned on the same day that the Hawks reached out to Despaigne.
The Chiba Lotte Marines would like Alfredo Despaigne to return to their team next year, but the Softbank Hawks are reportedly making making a strong push for his services. Despaigne told the Japanese media that he wanted to return to Chiba against next season, but the decision is not entirely his to make (the Cuban government has final say).
The Marines have rights to Despaigne until the end of November. Team officials are planning to travel to Cuba on November 21 to argue their case and present an offer that might be for two years at around 600 million yen (he just finished a two-year contract worth an estimated 500 million yen). The Hawks might be preparing a two-year deal at around 800 million yen.
