The media learned on November 20 that Motohiro Shima is planning to step down as Chairman of the Japan Professional Baseball Players Association (JPBPA) on December 7, 2017. Shima took over as chairman in November 2012 after Takahiro Arai. Shima became the first chairman from the Pacific League.
According to Nikkan Sports, Ginjiro Sumitani is a strong candidate to take over as the next chairman.

Motohiro Shima fouled a pitch off his left foot during his at bat in the third inning of a game against the Seibu Lions at Kobo Park Miyagi on September 13. He was removed from the game on defense in the fourth inning and taken to a hospital in Sendai for tests where he was diagnosed with a bruise on his left big toe. He is considered day-to-day for the time being.0 Comments
Motohiro Shima took a batted ball off his left foot during yesterday’s (June 26) game against the Orix Buffaloes.
The incident took place in the top of the third inning. Orix’s Kenya Wakatsuki fouled off a pitch that hit Shima on the left foot. He remained in the game until he was replaced on defense in the fifth inning. He was taken to a hospital in Sendai and diagnosed with a bruise on the top of his left foot.
Shima will most likely be left out of the starting line-up against Orix on June 28.

Motohiro Shima left tonight’s game against the Yakult Swallows after he took a ball off what appeared to be the right side of his chin. The incident took place in the fifth inning with a runner on first and no out. Takahiro Norimoto threw a ball in the dirt that took a big hop and hit Shima near the chin. The catcher was able to retrieve the ball, but not before the runner on first was able to advance all the way to third.
Shima had a difficult time walking and had to be helped off the field.

Motohiro Shima hurt his right hand during last night’s (May 25) game against the Orix Buffaloes. The incident took place in the bottom of the ninth inning when Kengo Takeda foul tipped a ball off Shima’s right hand. He was immediately replaced by Yuichi Adachi.

Motohiro Shima complained of lower back pain this morning and was later taken off the active roster. The Rakuten Eagles decided to take him off the active roster because they felt he would not be able to play in any games for at least about a week.0 Comments
Motohiro Shima left after he took a blow to the back of the head during tonight’s game against the Softbank Hawks at kobo Stadium.
With runners on first and second and no out in the sixth inning, Takahiro Norimoto got Alfredo Despaigne to swing at a fork ball in the dirt. Shima kept the ball in front of him and was moving toward the ball when Despaigne’s back swing clipped him in the back of the head.
Shima was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to a hospital for tests.

Shima was examined at a hospital in Sendai and diagnosed with a bruise on the left side of his neck. The Eagles are planning to take a wait-and-see approach.

Shima participated in early practices today, then skipped pre-game batting practice for another evaluation at a hospital. He was apparently given the green light because he made the starting line-up at catcher and batted ninth.0 Comments

The Rakuten Eagles announced that Shima will be donating 10,000 yen to the Pink Ribbon Festival (The Japan Cancer Society) for every hit he records this season. He has been donating money to the cause since 2015.
Motohiro Shima is taking things a little slow because of some tight in his legs. WBC Manager Hiroki Kokubo is exploring the possibility of giving Shima an inning during a practice game against Orix on March 5. If the catcher’s condition does not improve, Kokubo might consider a replacement. Ginjiro Sumitani is a possibility.
Kokubo would like to have three healthy catchers on the roster because it will give him the option to burn through a catcher with a pinch-hitter and still have a back-up in case of an injury.

Shima is still not fully recovered from his right calf injury (tightness). He told reporters after practices on March 2 that he could probably play if needed, but not at full strength. He also indicated that he was concerned he might do more harm than good. There is a good chance he will be replaced.

Shima rejoined to the Rakuten Eagles today at Kurashiki Muscat Stadium. He played catch, took batting practices, and participated in infield drills. Masataka Nashida would like to see him ready to play in games some where around March 20.

Shima is currently slated to play in his first exhibition game on March 16 against Hiroshima at Shizuoka. Takayuki Kishi is scheduled to start the game. Nashida wants to give the catcher a chance to catch Kishi for about two innings. Shima told reporters he was close to 100 percent in everything, other than running.

Shima played in an exhibition game against Hiroshima on March 16. He started at catcher, batted eighth, and played three innings. He struck out swinging in his only at bat in the third inning.0 Comments
Motohiro Shima ended practice early on February 9 because of tightness in his lower body (calf). He returned to the team hotel for rest. His condition does not appear to be serious.

Shima took outdoor live batting practice on February 19 for the first time since he started feeling discomfort in his lower body. He took forty swings. He also caught Takayuki Kishi and Wataru Karashima in the bullpen.
