Oyama became the 101st player in Hanshin franchise history to bat clean-up.
September 2 vs Chunichi at Koshien Stadium – Oyama hit a home run off Ryosuke Oguma in the third inning and became the first rookie in NPB history to hit a home run out of the clean-up spot since Kojiro Machida on July 29, 1992.

September 16 vs Yokohama at Yokohama Stadium – Oyama went 6-for-6 with seven RBI (1B7 one RBI, HR7 one RBI, HR7 two RBI, 1B7, 1B8, HR7 three RBI). He became the sixth player in NPB history since 1950 to record at least six hits in a game, first since Kenji Jojima went 6-for-7 in 2003 and the twentieth player in NPB history (eleventh in Central League history, fifth in Tigers’ history) to blast two home runs in an inning. Oyama became the first player in NPB history to record six hits and three home runs in one game and the fourth player in NPB history to hit three home runs with two in one inning.
September 27 vs Yokohama at Koshien Stadium – Oyama recorded an inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning (off Joe Wieland). Oyama hit a drive to left-center. Center fielder Tomo Otosaka attempted a diving catch and thought he made the play, but it was ruled a hit (one-hop). The misunderstanding gave Oyama enough time to complete the inside-the-park home run.
This was the first inside-the-park home run by a Hanshin player since Hiroki Uemoto on August 1, 2017 (vs Hiroshima at Mazda Stadium) and the first by a Hanshin player at Koshien Stadium since Masayuki Kakefu on April 26, 1988 (vs Taiyo).
Oyama told the media about his love for natto (fermented soy beans) during workouts on January 3. The Japan Natto Cooperative Society Federation picked up on the news and would like to send him regular shipments (maybe once a month) of different kinds of natto.

Kanemoto asked Oyama to drop his fat percentage by about five percent, from eighteen to between twelve and thirteen, this winter.
Oyama received offers from several management companies after the 2017 season, but he turned them down because he does not want to give up control of his off-season schedule.
