The Yakult Swallows announced today that Shingo Kawabata will have surgery to treat a herniated disc some time this month. He developed the condition during spring camp this year and was hoping to avoid going under the knife.
[UPDATE 8/18 @ 12:55am]
A neck injury during a Ni-gun rehab game against Nippon Ham on July 23 kept Kawabata out of addition rehab games until August 6. He decided to have surgery when he then developed pain near his lower back while throwing the ball during fielding practices.
