[5/9/2018] Seiichi Uchikawa reaches 2000 hits

Seiichi Uchikawa pushed his career hit total to 2,000 when he hit a single to center off Shota Takekuma in the eighth inning of a game against the Sebu Lions at MetLife Dome on May 9. Uchikawa is the fifty-first player in NPB history to reach the milestone.

Uchikawa went hitless in fourteen straight trips to the plate (G6, G5, BB, SF8, G5, F9, Fo5, Fo3, F3, E5, G6, G4, F8, G6) before he recorded the 2,000th hit of his career. The last player that went hitless in eleven or more trips to the plate prior to reaching 2,000 hits was Tomoaki Kanemoto with eighteen in 2008.

Other facts about Uchikawa’s 2,000th hit:

  • ninth fastest in NPB history at 1,800 games
    • third fastest right-handed hitter in NPB history, behind Alex Ramirez (1,695 games) and Shigeo Nagashima (1,708 games)
    • fastest right-handed hitter out of high school
  • eleventh (tied) youngest in NPB history at thirty-five years and nine months
  • first player to reach 2,000 hits since Takashi Toritani on September 8, 2017
  • second player to reach 2,000 hits at MetLife Dome. The other: Hiroyuki Yamazaki in 1983.
