[12/3/2018] Rakuten Eagles: Wheeler, Herrmann, Sung to return in 2019

The Rakuten Eagles announced that they reached agreements with Zelous Wheeler, Frank Herrmann, and Chia-Hao Sung for the 2019 season.

  • Zelous Wheeler – 200 million yen
  • Frank Herrmann – 130 million yen
  • Chia-Hao Sung – 15 million yen

The Eagles also announced that Japhet Amador, Carlos Peguero, and O’Koyea Dickson will not be returning next year.

[11/30/2018] Yoshihiro Maru planning to sign with the Yomiuri Giants

According to numerous media reports, Yoshiharu Maru is planning to sign with the Yomiuri Giants. An official announcement could be made some time today.

Maru spoke to media at Mazda Stadium today and told them he decided to sign with the Giants. He made the decision last night and contacted Tatsunori Hara this morning. He also contacted Tadahito Iguchi to turn down Lotte’s offer (his agent contact Lotte officials).

The Giants held a press conference for Maru at a hotel in Tokyo on December 11. He was assigned the uniform number  8. According to media reports, he agreed to a five year deal worth an estimated 2.55 billion yen (and possibly over 3 billion yen with performance bonuses). Maru’s salary in 2019 will be an estimated 450 million yen.

[11/27/2018] Yakult Swallows add Hayato Terahara

The Yakult Swallows announced that they reached an agreement with Hayato Terahara. The Swallows see Terahara as someone that might be able to provide innings out of the bullpen. According to media reports, the two sides agreed to a one-year deal worth an estimated twenty-two million yen.

[11/25/2018] Ginjiro Sumitani to sign with the Yomiuri Giants

Ginjiro Sumitani informed the Seibu Lions on November 23 that he was planning to sign with another team. He then told the Yomiuri Giants that he wanted to accept their offer on November 24. The Giants are planning to hold a press conference on November 26 after Sumitani formally signs what is said to be a three-year contract worth an estimated 600 million yen.

[11/22/2018] Yomuiri Giants add veteran Hiroyuki Nakajima

The Yomiuri Giants announced that thirty-six-year-old Hiroyuki Nakajima will be joining their organization in 2019. Tatsunori Hara accompanied Nakajima during a press conference at Tokyo Dome earlier today. He was assigned the uniform number 5 (Alex Guerrero’s new number will be 44).

[11/22/2018] Yomiuri Giants reach agreement with Christian Villanueva

The Yomiuri Giants announced that they reached an agreement with twenty-seven-year-old Christian Villanueva. His registered name will be Villanueva and his uniform number 33.

I am honored to sign a contract with the Yomiuri Giants, a team with tradition. I have never been to Japan, but I have an image of Japanese players as disciplined and players that practice a lot. I am looking forward to playing in front of the large crowds at Tokyo Dome. With new teammates and a new environment, I will do my best to help the team win a pennant and championship.

[11/20/2018] Hideto Asamura planning to sign with the Rakuten Eagles

Hideto Asamura has reportedly informed the Rakuten Eagles that he wants to make Sendai his new home. Asamura has also informed the Orix Buffaloes, Softbank Hawks, and Seibu Lions about his plans to sign with another team. The Eagles could make a formal announcement of a deal some time soon.

[11/20/2018] Yokohama Bay Stars add Toru Komura and Daisuke Nakai

The Yokohama Bay Stars announced that they reached agreements with Toru Komura and former Yomiuri Giant Daisuke Nakai. Uniform numbers have not yet been assigned.

Komura was originally drafted by Yokohama in the eighth round of the 2011 draft. He spent three years in their organization, but struggled with right shoulder problems and never made it to Ichi-gun. He retired after he was released by Yokohama in 2014 and remained with the team as a batting practice pitcher. He left the Bay Stars after 2015 and signed with the Shikoku Island League’s Ehime Mandarin Pirates. He spent two seasons with Ehime and played for the BC League’s Toyama GRN Thunderbirds this year.

Nakai spent ten years in the Yomiuri Giants organization and posted a slash line of .244/.301/.351 over 345 games.

According to media reports, Komura agreed to a salary worth an estimated six million yen and Nakai a salary worth an estimated 12 million yen.
