[UPDATE 9/13 @ 6:46am]

The Dragons are planning to sit down with Guerrero to discuss an extension, but they may not be able to afford it.

According to Daily Sports, Dragons are playing him an estimated 150 million yen this year. However, the Dodgers are also apparently still paying him a salary (final year of a four-year contract). The question is whether or not the Dragons will be able to offer enough to entice him to stay.

Sanspo posted a report on Tuesday morning (September 12) that they might offer him a multi-year deal worth 300 million yen in 2018. People connected to other teams feel it will take anywhere from 300 to upwards of 500 million.

Tokyo Sports adds that people within the Chunichi organization might be split on Guerrero. Those that want to sign him to an extension love his power, but those against signing him are concerned about his defense and all the hit by pitches (greater chance for injury).

According to Sports Hochi, if the Dragons are paying Guerrero an estimated 1.5 million US dollars (about 150 million yen), then the Dodgers might be paying about 5.5 million US dollars (550 million yen).

Guerrero might be okay with a one-year deal worth around 400 million yen.

[UPDATE 9/26 @ 7:54pm]

They are planning to give themselves until about the end of November to sign him. If they cannot sign him by then, they will leave him off their list of reserved players.

[UPDATE 10/8 @ 3:30am]

Guerrero left Japan for the United States out of Chubu International Airport on October 7.

According to Sports Hochi, the Dragons offered Guerrero a one-year deal worth around 330 million yen, but the slugger apparently wants around 550 million yen and three years. His agent is quoted as saying that his client likes the idea of playing in Japan, but the Dragons have no chance.

[UPDATE 10/8 @ 4:45pm]

If an NPB team wants to sign Guerrero, they might have to go along with a three-year deal worth between one and 1.5 billion yen. Hanshin, Yomiuri, and Softbank might all be interested. Guerrero likes playing in Japan and is planning to give NPB teams the edge if he receives similarly priced contracts from MLB teams.

[UPDATE 10/21 @ 5:41pm]

Dragons’ Team Representative Kazuo Nishiyama told reporters on October 13 that while Guerrero hit thirty-five home runs this season, there were still a lot of things he lacked in his game. He also said if the slugger really wanted to become a part of the team, he had to start running to first base and that if he was unable to do that, he was not needed.

[UPDATE 12/1 @ 2:30pm]

Sports Hochi is reporting that the Dragons have ended negotiations with Guerrero. They have also left him off their list of reserved players, meaning other teams will be allowed to approach him as soon as it becomes official with the commissioner’s office.
