[5/19/2018] Kodai Senga taken off active roster for second time this season

Kodai Senga was taken off the active roster today with tightness in his right forearm. Kimiyasu Kudo told reporters Senga’s condition was not serious and that it was just taking a little longer for the tightness to go away. Kudo does not think Senga will have to miss more than one start.

Livan Moinelo: Did You Know


May 17 vs Rakuten at Rakuten Seimei – Moinelo struck out three in a row, each on three pitches, and became the seventh player in Pacific League history (eighteenth in the NPB) to accomplish the feat, first since Yuki Matsui against Lotte on April 25, 2017.

[5/15/2018] Seiichi Uchikawa leaves game after fouling ball off leg

Seiichi Uchikawa fouled a ball off his left leg during his second at bat in the third inning of a game against the Rakuten Eagles at Rakuten Seimei Park on May 15. He was then replaced on defense with runners on first and second and one out in the bottom-half of the inning as a precaution.

Uchikawa was examined at a hospital in Sendai and diagnosed with a bruise on his left medial malleolus. He is considered day-to-day.

Uchikawa was taken off the active roster on May 17. The Softbank Hawks decided to give the veteran some time to recover. Uchikawa was also apparently still feeling the effects of an HBP to the right knee in April. He is expected to return to the active roster in the minimum ten days.

[5/9/2018] Seiichi Uchikawa reaches 2000 hits

Seiichi Uchikawa pushed his career hit total to 2,000 when he hit a single to center off Shota Takekuma in the eighth inning of a game against the Sebu Lions at MetLife Dome on May 9. Uchikawa is the fifty-first player in NPB history to reach the milestone.



[5/5/2018] Robert Suarez returns to Japan

Robert Suarez had Tommy John surgery in April last year and had been rehabbing in Puerto Rico. Suarez returned to Japan today and told reporters that he was at about ninety percent (he has already thrown off a mound and faced some hitters). He will begin practices at the Softbank Hawks’ farm facilities on May 6.

[4/29/2018] Dennis Sarfate has right hip surgery

The media learned on April 27 that Dennis Sarfate had surgery on his right hip. Sarfate was examined at a hospital in Colorado after he returned to the United States on April 20. The closer opted for surgery after discussions with doctors and the Softbank Hawks. He will require about four months for a full recovery. and will rehab the hip in the United States.



[4/21/2018] Yuki Yanagita hits for the cycle

Yuki Yanagita hit for the cycle (home run in the first, single in the fourth, double in the fifth, and triple in the eighth) during a game against the Nippon Ham Fighters at Sapporo Dome on April 21. Sixty-five players have now hit for the cycle seventy times in NPB history (thirty-two players and thirty-three times in the Pacific League). Yanagita is the first player in the NPB to hit for the cycle since Kosuke Fukudome on July 30, 2016; the first in the Pacific League since Julio Zuleta on September 22, 2007; and the first Hawk since Arihito Muramatsu on July 1, 2003.

Other facts:

  • Yanagita became the thirteenth player (accomplished fourteen times) to hit for the cycle while recording five hits. He is the ninth player (accomplished ten times) and first Hawk to complete the cycle with their fifth hit.
  • Yanagita became the fifth player to hit for the cycle by going HR, single, double, and triple (first since Takahiro Ikeyama on August 23, 1990).
  • Yanagita became the second player to complete a cycle with their fifth hit a triple. The other player was Robert Rose on May 2, 1995 and April 29, 1997.
  • Yanagita joined Tokuji Iida (August 24, 1955), Hiroshi Fujimoto (July 7, 1990), and Muramatsu as the only players in Hawk history to hit for a cycle.

[4/18/2018] Tomoya Ichikawa heads to Softbank in cash trade

The Softbank Hawks and Nippon Ham Fighters announced on April 18 that they reached an agreement on a trade. The Fighters will send thirty-two-year-old Tomoya Ichikawa to the Hawks for cash considerations.

Softbank assigned Ichikawa the uniform number 30.

[4/18/2018] Seiichi Uchikawa leaves game after taking pitch off knee

Seiichi Uchikawa was hit by a pitch near his right knee during his at bat in the seventh inning of a game against the Rakuten Eagles at YafuOku Dome on April 18. He had to be helped off the field and was replaced by a pinch-runner. He is considered day-to-day.

[4/18/2018] Akira Nakamura hurts leg while running bases

Akira Nakamura hurt his right hamstring while running the bases in the sixth inning of a game against the Rakuten Eagles on April 17. He was examined at a hospital in Fukuoka today and diagnosed with a mild injury to his biceps femoris that will require two to three weeks for a full recovery.

Nakamura was taken off the active roster today. He told reporters his goal was to make a return as soon as possible, perhaps even after ten days.
