[12/6/2018] Yomiuri Giants reach agreement with Hisashi Iwakuma

The Yomiuri Giants announced that they reached an agreement with thirty-seven-year-old Hisashi Iwakuma. A formal agreement, followed by a press conference, will be made on a later date.

The Giants held a press conference for Iwakuma on December 19. He was assigned the uniform number 21. According to media reports, Iwakuma agreed to a one-year deal worth an estimated fifty million yen.

[11/30/2018] Yoshihiro Maru planning to sign with the Yomiuri Giants

According to numerous media reports, Yoshiharu Maru is planning to sign with the Yomiuri Giants. An official announcement could be made some time today.

Maru spoke to media at Mazda Stadium today and told them he decided to sign with the Giants. He made the decision last night and contacted Tatsunori Hara this morning. He also contacted Tadahito Iguchi to turn down Lotte’s offer (his agent contact Lotte officials).

The Giants held a press conference for Maru at a hotel in Tokyo on December 11. He was assigned the uniform number  8. According to media reports, he agreed to a five year deal worth an estimated 2.55 billion yen (and possibly over 3 billion yen with performance bonuses). Maru’s salary in 2019 will be an estimated 450 million yen.

[11/25/2018] Ginjiro Sumitani to sign with the Yomiuri Giants

Ginjiro Sumitani informed the Seibu Lions on November 23 that he was planning to sign with another team. He then told the Yomiuri Giants that he wanted to accept their offer on November 24. The Giants are planning to hold a press conference on November 26 after Sumitani formally signs what is said to be a three-year contract worth an estimated 600 million yen.

[11/22/2018] Yomiuri Giants reach agreement with Christian Villanueva

The Yomiuri Giants announced that they reached an agreement with twenty-seven-year-old Christian Villanueva. His registered name will be Villanueva and his uniform number 33.

I am honored to sign a contract with the Yomiuri Giants, a team with tradition. I have never been to Japan, but I have an image of Japanese players as disciplined and players that practice a lot. I am looking forward to playing in front of the large crowds at Tokyo Dome. With new teammates and a new environment, I will do my best to help the team win a pennant and championship.

[11/15/2018] Yomiuri Giants: Jungmann, Mercedes, Adames, and Martinez to return in 2019

The Yomiuri Giants announced that Taylor Jungmann, Samuel Adames, Cristopher Crisostomo Mercedes, and Jorge Martinez will be returning next year.

  • Taylor Jungman – estimated one million US dollars
  • Samuel Adames – estimated 80,000 US dollars
  • Cristopher Crisostomo Mercedes – estimated 75,000 US dollars
  • Jorge Martinez – estimated 73,000 US dollars

Scott Mathieson and Alex Guerrero will be in the second year of two-year contracts next season.

The Giants also announced that Casey McGehee and Arquimedes Caminero will not be returning next year.
