Kenya Wakatsuki felt discomfort in his left hamstring while running the bases in the second inning of a game against the Rakuten Eagles at Rakuten Seimei Park Miyagi on April 21. He remained in the game until he was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning. He was examined at a hospital in Sendai and diagnosed with inflammation in his left hamstring. Yuki Karakawa hit Kenya Wakatsuki in the head with a pitch during tonight’s game against the Orix Buffaloes at ZOZO Marine Stadium. He was immediately ejected for throwing a dangerous pitch.
The incident took place in the third inning with no one on base and two out. Karakawa threw an 0-1 fastball that struck Wakatsuki in the head. The twenty-one-year-old catcher could not stand up (he was conscious) and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. He was taken to a hospital in Narashino, Chiba for tests.

Wakatsuki was diagnosed with a bruise on his upper left jaw. There were no abnormalities to the brain.

The Buffaloes are planning to give Wakatsuki time off until July 21. They re-evaluate his condition to determine if he is ready to play. Katsuki Yamazaki is on standby if Wakatsuki is unable to play.

Wakatsuki was born and raised in Kazo. He attended Hanasaki Tokuharu High School in Kazo and was drafted by Orix in 2013.

Kenya Wakatsuki was hit by three back swings during tonight’s game against the Seibu Lions at MetLife Dome — twice by Ernesto Mejia and once by Fumikazu Kimura. He was removed from the game on defense in the sixth and sent to a hospital in Tokyo for tests.

Wakatsuki was diagnosed with a bruise on his head. He will get the day off today. The team will then reassess his condition and take things day-by-day.
