[12/3/2018] Rakuten Eagles: Wheeler, Herrmann, Sung to return in 2019

The Rakuten Eagles announced that they reached agreements with Zelous Wheeler, Frank Herrmann, and Chia-Hao Sung for the 2019 season.

The Eagles also announced that Japhet Amador, Carlos Peguero, and O’Koyea Dickson will not be returning next year.

[6/15/2018] Zelous Wheeler out eight weeks

Zelous Wheeler hurt his left index finger (base of the intermediate phalanx) while attempting to steal second during a game against Hanshin at Rakuten Seimei on June 15. He was taken to a hospital in Sendai for tests and was diagnosed with an avulsion fracture. He could require about eight weeks for a full recovery.

[10/25/2017] Rakuten Eagles sign Zelous Wheeler to 2-year extension

Sanspo is reporting that the Rakuten Eagles and Zelous Wheeler reached an agreement on a two-year extension worth a total 400 million yen plus incentives with a club option for a third year.

September 23, 2017 vs Softbank at YafuOku Dome – Wheeler blasted his twenty-ninth home run of the season (second inning off  Nao Higashihama) and set a new Rakuten Eagles’ single-season home run record for a foreign player. The previous record of twenty-eight was set by Jose Fernandez in 2006 and Casey McGehee in 2013.

September 25, 2017 vs Softbank at YafuOku Dome – Wheeler recorded his thirtieth home run of the year. Only one other Rakuten player has managed to accomplish the feat: Takeshi Yamasaki with forty-three in 2007 and thirty-nine in 2009.

[9/23/2017] Rakuten Eagles expected to offer Wheeler, Peguero, Amador, Herrmann new contracts

According to a report by Nikkan Sports, the Rakuten Eagles are expected to offer thirty-year-old Zelous Wheeler, thirty-year-old Carlos Peguero, thirty-year-old Japhet Amador, and thirty-three-year-old Frank Herrmann new contracts for the 2018 season. With regards to Wheeler, they will most likely sign him to a two-year deal.

It is unclear what the Eagles plans are with twenty-seven-year-old Joshua Corrales and thirty-three-year-old Luis Cruz.

[11/28/2016] Rakuten Eagles sign Wheeler, Amador, Peguero, Sung to new contracts

The Rakuten Eagles announced today that they signed Zelous Wheeler (29), Japhet Amador (29), Carlos Peguero (29), and Chia-Hao Sung (24) to new contracts for the 2017 season.

According to the media, Wheeler agreed to a deal worth 100 million yen, Amador 30 million yen, Peguero 85 million yen, and Sung 4.4 million yen.

Zelous Wheeler is expected to return to the Rakuten Eagles next year. Wheeler is interested in staying and the Eagles feel he fills a needed role with the team, namely a bat with some pop.
